Great expectations or Can you build VC in Canada?
Some blog thoughts on building a VC ecosystem in Canada.
I have to admit, at first I was pretty disappointed by this post.
I mean, the basic take-away is the Nike-ian just do it! Or, as it is put in the blog: “We[Canadians] have to learn how to expect more and know how to get more.”
Just add the swoosh.
But then again, that’s the beauty of it. The unfortunate truth is that in Canada we often settle for less and don’t demand of ourselves the very best. When we do up our expectations, the results are record-breaking (“own the podium” anyone?…And no, I’m not being ironic…. more golds than anyone… ever…)
So could “own the podium” mentality finally bring a functioning VC ecosystem to Canada. You could argue where in the ecosystem we’d have to start: LPs? VCs? entrepreneurs?
I think it would have to start at the LP level increasing their demands on VCs, who in turn would seek to get more return from their investments.
Anecdotally I hear that VCs are willing to sell too early in Canada and would rather sell quickly with a small return instead of trying to build a truly great company. If this is true, then additional pressure from LPs for higher returns may promote greater company-building on the part of VCs and start-ups.
