HTML5 is a pragmatic, not ideological choice
Weinberg emphasized that one of the most important parts of these HTML5-based redesigns is that they will make Hearst properties fully functional across multiple platforms, so readers can have access to these sites “whenever they need and it wherever they need it.”
That is a key benefit with HTML5 apps, the ability to write once/run anywhere. Many percieve HTML5 apps to be some sort of frontal assault on native apps, but they aren’t. Native apps are great and have their place on a device.
But HTML5 is increasingly becoming a pragmatic choice if you have easy to display content that you want shown on a multitude of devices.
